Rules Meeting Policy

By Representative Council Action:

Rules Meetings Required for Officials and Coaches:  Each head coach of a varsity team in a sport under MHSAA jurisdiction shall complete the MHSAA rules meeting for that sport for the current school year. If the head coach does not complete the rules meetings, an administrator or designee from that coach’s school shall do so.

SECTION 8 (B)—Each head coach of a varsity team in a sport under MHSAA jurisdiction shall complete (in person or online) the MHSAA rules meetings for that sport for the current school year if meetings are provided and attendance is required. If the head coach does not complete a rules meeting that coach shall be prohibited from coaching in that season's MHSAA tournament for the sport involved and shall not be present at the facility where the MHSAA tournament involving that coach's team is being held. An administrator of that school shall be present with supervisory capacity over the school's competitors.

By Representative Council Action :  There is no exam substitute for head coach attendance in sports for which an online rules- meeting option exists.  A head coach who fails to complete a meeting when offered on-line or in person shall be prohibited from coaching in that season's MHSAA tournament for the sport involved and shall not be present at the facility where the MHSAA tournament involving that coach's team is being held.  An administrator of that school shall be present with supervisory capacity over the school's competitors.

SECTION 8 (C)—If a school fails for two consecutive years to have any representative (head coach or other school coach or administrator) complete or attend a rules meeting (either in person or online) at the start of a sport season as designated for that sport, that school will be placed on probation and will be barred from participation in the next MHSAA tournament in that sport.

NOTE: If a school is represented at meetings preceding the fall season for a sport and that sport is conducted in another season for another gender, the school fulfills the minimum requirements of the regulation.

It is necessary for officials to attend rules meetings in person or online if they wish to be considered for tournament play in that sport.  Officials who are extended invitations to officiate MHSAA Tournament contests in  baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball, volleyball, and wrestling shall be members in good standing of a Local Approved Association.
