Making its first-ever MHSAA Finals appearance, Quincy defeated defending champion Saginaw
Nouvel, 9-6, to capture the Division III baseball title on Saturday. The Orioles (30-4)
took advantage of seven Nouvel errors and never trailed after building a 3-0 lead in the
top of the second inning, although the game was tied once--at three after three innings.
Quincy went ahead for good in the fourth on an RBI triple by senior third baseman Tim
Lynch, who then scored on the play following a Nouvel error. The Orioles had just five
hits on the day, but it was enough to back the pitching of senior Seth Coffing, who
scattered 10 hits in going the distance. Nouvel (32-11-1) had four players with two
hits, and senior outfielder Matt Buggia added a two-run homer for the Panthers in the
sixth, cutting the Quincy lead to 8-6.
