Dressing for Success by Getting in Gear

Registered MHSAA officials are no different from any other professional: their appearance while at work often dictates the public perception.  Below are the uniform requirements outlined in the Officials Guidebook (pgs. 5-6) for officials in each sport with products from Honig's, the official MHSAA supplier of official's gear.

Sport-by-Sport Uniform Requirements

Baseball Umpires

he required uniform of an umpire for both regular season and tournament contests consists of either a navy blue or powder blue pullover with red/white or navy/white sleeve and collar stripes, gray slacks and proper umpire cap.  Although either navy blue or powder blue pullover shirts are allowed, both (all) umpires must wear the same color pullover.  An umpires cap with the MHSAA monogrammed logo is permitted.  All other articles (i.e., turtleneck, undershirt and jacket) shall be navy blue. The belt, shoes and socks shall be solid black. The ball bag shall be either gray or navy blue. The current MHSAA OFFICIALS EMBLEM shall be visible and WORN ON THE LEFT POCKET.
Umpire Shirts- Honig’s MHMLS, HMLSN, HMLSWN, HMLSLB or equivalent
Umpire Pants- Any of the Honig’s PB or B model gray pants or equivalent are acceptable.
Jacket- M18, K17N or equivalent
Cap- MK02 or MK03


Basketball Officials

MHSAA OFFICIALS EMBLEM shall be WORN ON LEFT POCKET AREA of black and white striped vneck shirt; black trousers; black warmup jacket; solid black basketball shoes with black laces and black belt. (Black socks are to be worn with lowcut shoes.) Note: The only acceptable shirt is the black and white striped shirt. NOTE: THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE SHIRT IS THE BLACK AND WHITE STRIPED SHIRT.
Shirts- B11, B12 or B19 v-neck shirt or equivalent
Pants- Any of the Honig’s B or WB model black pants or equivalent are acceptable.
Jacket- MK15B or equivalent


Competitive Cheer Judges

Judges are required to wear a solid white blouse or top and solid black skirt, suit, dress, or dress slacks. Any additional garments such as a blazer shall be black. Judges must wear the MHSAA OFFICIALS EMBLEM on the left chest pocket area of the blouse or jacket/blazer OR display the emblem or MHSAA ID CARD in a clear vinyl badge holder suspended by a black lanyard around the neck.
 

Cross Country and Track Officials

The MHSAA EMBLEM shall be WORN ON THE LEFT CHEST POCKET AREA of the uniform, which is a long sleeved jacket, sweater or shirt with a red body and collar and full yellow sleeves. The uniform includes tan slacks or shorts. A red baseballstyle cap is optional.
Jacket- K16 or equivalent
Starter’s Yellow Sleeve- TR12 or equivalent
Flags- S41 or equivalent
 

Football Officials

Black baseball cap with white piping; Referees — white cap; MHSAA OFFICIALS EMBLEM shall be WORN ON LEFT POCKET AREA of black and white striped shirt; white knickers or white or black officiating shorts (fiveinch inseam and crew must match) may be worn in place of knickers for subvarsity contests only. If a belt is required it shall be black. All officials, in a given game, are to wear the same type shorts; solid black football shoes; and black and white vertically striped jacket (to be worn outside when worn during the game). Black stockings (stirrup maximum five inches) with modified northwestern stripes, complete the required uniform.

Gymnastics Judges

Judges of girls gymnastics are required to wear a solid white top and solid black skirt, dress or slacks. Any additional garments should be black. Judges must wear their MHSAA OFFICIALS EMBLEM on the LEFT CHEST POCKET AREA OF THE BLOUSE/SHIRT OR COAT/BLAZER OR display the emblem in a clear vinyl badge holder with a black lanyard.


Ice Hockey Officials

Black trousers; black and white striped shirt; black skates are required; the MHSAA OFFICIALS EMBLEM shall be WORN ON THE LEFT SLEEVE of shirt. A black ice hockey helmet is required equipment and must be worn during warmup periods.
Sweater- H12, H13 or equivalent
Pants- H17 or equivalent
Armbands- H20 or equivalent


Boys Lacrosse

The required uniform for Boys Lacrosse officials shall consist of a black baseball cap with white piping. The MHSAA OFFICIALS EMBLEM shall be WORN ON THE LEFT POCKET AREA of a black and white striped shirt. A black and white striped officials jacket is also acceptable. Black shorts (minimum six-inch inseam) or full-length black nylon wind pants in lieu of shorts.  All officials working the game are to be dressed the same.  The socks shall be black over the ankle. The shoes, whistle, lanyard and gloves (if worn) shall be solid black.  The penalty marker shall be a weighted yellow flag (15 inches x 15 inches).  Officials shall have the proper equipment as under NFHS Rules.  Officials may agree to all wear long black pants with a 1 ¼” white stripe as in football.  Note:  In the year of transition for Spring  2013 only officials may continue to wear white shorts and white over the ankle or knee high socks.  All must agree in advance and all must dress the same.

Girls Lacrosse

The required uniform for Girls Lacrosse officials shall consist of a white and black striped shirt (long or short sleeved). The MHSAA OFFICIALS EMBLEM shall be WORN ON THE LEFT POCKET AREA. A black and white striped officials jacket is also acceptable. Black shorts, kilt or nylon wind pants shall be worn. All crew members shall dress alike in respect to their shirt style. All other accessories (hat, shoes, socks, whistle, gloves, lanyard) shall be solid black.  The penalty flag shall be a yellow flag (15 inches x 15 inches).

Soccer Officials

 The MHSAA Emblem shall be worn ON THE LEFT CHEST POCKET AREA of the USSF yellow/gold shirt with black pinstripes. If an alternate shirt is necessary, it should be either a red shirt with black pinstripes or a black shirt with white pinstripes. The black shirt with white collar and cuffs or the fuchsia colored shirts may also continue to be used. All officials at the game shall wear the same color shirt. Black shorts four inches above the knee are recommended, or long trousers, black shoes and black stockings with three horizontal white stripes are required.

Softball Umpires

Swimming Officials

The MHSAA OFFICIALS EMBLEM shall be WORN ON THE LEFT SLEEVE OR LEFT POCKET AREA. The proper and required uniform on deck is a white shirt, white or navy trousers or shorts and white shoes and socks. For all MHSAA tournaments in 201011, and all events in 201112 and beyond, the officials’ uniform will be navy blue slacks. If a belt is worn it shall be black or navy. At the MHSAA FINALS, all officials must wear navy blue SLACKS; shorts are not allowed.

Volleyball Officials

The official’s uniform shall consist of a solid white, shortsleeved collared polo shirt; black slacks, and black belt if worn; solid black  shoes and black socks. A navy blue or black warmup jacket is recommended. All officials wearing a jacket will wear the same color. The MHSAA OFFICIALS EMBLEM shall be WORN ON THE LEFT POCKET AREA of the shirt. Undergarments, sweatshirts or shirts which extend below the cuff of a short sleeve officials shirt are prohibited.

Shirts- S1, S2 S3 or equivalent
Pants- Any of the Honig’s B or WB model black pants or equivalent are acceptable.
Jacket- MK15B or equivalent


Wrestling Referees

MHSAA OFFICIALS EMBLEM shall be WORN ON LEFT POCKET AREA of a short sleeved knit shirt, with alternating black and white oneinch stripes, full length black trousers, black belt, black gym shoes, black socks and one red (left wrist) and one green (right wrist) wristband.

Shirts- B10, B15, F11, F14 F16 or equivalent
Pants- Any of the Honig’s B model black pants or equivalent are acceptable.
Jacket- MK15B or equivalent
Wristbands- WB or equivalent
