A Day in the Life of High School Sports

A pile of shoes clutters a doorway. A man teaches algebra to 9th-graders who have the weekend on their minds. A woman screenprints another T-shirt in her basement. A man brooms dead flies from a countertop.

Riverting scenes, for sure.

Yet, people around Michigan pay $5 for these, and other activities on a routine basis, weekend after weekend, during the school year without knowing it. Until now.

Division 3 Football Final: Eaglets Fly Again

Five times since its most recent MHSAA football championship, Orchard Lake St. Mary returned to the championship game – and lost.

Saturday night there was no stopping the Eaglets – or their running attack – at the Division 3 Final at Ford Field.

Division 5 Football Final: Powers Up

The final night of September was cold, wet and especially disappointing for Flint Powers Catholic.

Chargers coach Bob Buckel sensed that frustration as the bus rolled to to a stop after 6-0 loss and then silent ride home from Davison. Powers already was 2-3 heading into that game and needing to win out to guarantee a playoff spot.

The last eight games became unofficial playoff games for the Chargers. And they won them all.

Geoff Kimmerly joined the Michigan High School Athletic Association in September 2011 after nearly 12 years as Prep Sports Editor at the Lansing State Journal. His work also has appeared in USA Today and newspapers across the state, and he served as a state voter for The Associated Press.
