Sturgis 3, Pinconning 2
Sophomore DH Nate Lung hit a two-out bases-loaded
double to center field in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Sturgis
its first MHSAA baseball title, a 3-2 decision over Pinconning in Division
2. Trailing 2-1 entering their last at bat, the Trojans loaded the bases
on a leadoff walk, a single by first baseman Tim Kozlow, and an intentional
walk following a sacrifice bunt.
Relief pitcher Jeff Hudson struck out right fielder Nick Hochstetler, setting
up Lung's heroics. Sturgis' Bryan Vercler went the distance for the win,
scattering six hits. He was touched for a pair of runs in the fourth inning
when Hudson, then playing second base, led off with a solo homer, and third
baseman Ben Galus added an RBI double.
Sturgis scored first on an RBI single in the first inning by catcher Ricky
Hart, who was 3-for-3 on the day and was served the intentional walk in
the seventh.
Sturgis completes the season 37-3-1, while Pinconning falls to 34-7.
