Senior pitcher Keri DeJong pitched a two-hit, 17-strikeout gem to lead Kalamazoo Christian
to a 2-1 win over Richmond in the MHSAA Division III Softball Final on Saturday. Tied at
1-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, Kalamazoo Christian (32-8) earned its third
straight MHSAA crown when senior first baseman Angela Kiel delivered a bases-loaded single
with one out to win the game. Kiel's drive made a winner out of DeJong in the state
finals for the third straight year. DeJong hurled a no-hitter vs. Bay City All Saints in
1996, and tossed a three-hitter vs. Clinton for the crown last season. Kiel, third
baseman Leslee Szekely and catcher Emily Mejeur each had two hits for the Comets in their
10-hit attack. The Comets stranded nine runners vs. Richmond (36-5), which was making its
first Finals appearance.
