The first Friday of girls basketball season is tonight, but a few key matchups Thursday were among the most significant of the first week.

In a rematch of a 2015 Class A Quarterfinal, Waterford Kettering emerged as the victor this time over two-time reigning champion Bloomfield Hills Marian – Oakland Press
Potential Class C contender Kent City downed expected Class A contender Muskegon 59-58 as the teams traded last-second baskets – Muskegon Chronicle
Manistee held off a comeback attempt by Traverse City St. Francis for a key 51-43 early-season victory in a meeting of top northern Lower Peninsula programs – Manistee News Advocate
D8 Final rematch set (Kalamazoo Gazette)

Big news on the football opening night front: Reigning Division 8 champion Mendon will face Fowler in a rematch of last season's Final at Ford Field.
Filling the schedule can be a tough task when a school has won 10 MHSAA championships, as the Hornets have accomplished. The Eagles frequently have been feared as well and own four MHSAA titles. The Kalamazoo Gazette's Scott Decamp gives us a rundown of how this rematch came together.
Mendon beat Fowler 33-0 in that championship game, but both teams are expected to return some of their biggest stars this fall.
