A busy weekend saw hundreds of wrestlers compete for individual District championships and many of the state’s top swimmers face off to see how they might stack up at next month’s MHSAA Finals.

Each weekday during the school year, we’ll gather and post media links covering the most significant and intriguing high school events from all over the state. 

Boys Basketball

Detroit East English won its Detroit Public School League quarterfinal over Pershing 82-80 on a dunk with two seconds to play – Detroit News

Niles Brandywine needed overtime but remains undefeated after a 48-40 win over Berrien Springs – Niles Daily Star

Gladstone upset formerly one-loss Sault Ste. Marie 74-47 with 31 points from Reece Castor – Escanaba Daily Press

Hockey

Hancock downed rival Houghton 7-4 in a matchup of neighbors and top Division 3 programs; Houghton is ranked No. 7 and Hancock is No. 6 – Houghton Daily Mining Gazette

Boys Swimming & Diving

Many of the best in Michigan competed at Saturday’s Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association meet, with Holland West Ottawa sophomore Derek Maas and Zeeland senior Gabriel Trevino winning multiple races – MISCAonline.net

Wrestling

Top-ranked Detroit Catholic Central sent 14 wrestlers through to Division 1 Regionals, including 10 District champions – Observer & Eccentric

In Division 3, No. 2 Richmond also advanced 14 to Regionals with 10 District champions – Macomb Daily

Gaylord, No. 5 in Division 2, sent 10 to Regionals with five winning titles Saturday – Petoskey News-Review

Brighton tied a school record by advancing 12 wrestlers to Regionals in Division 1 – Livingston Daily Press & Argus

1. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Buckley earned a share of its first league title in this sport, sweeping Frankfort to claim part of the Northwest Conference championship with Suttons Bay and Onekama – Traverse City Record-Eagle

2. CROSS COUNTRY Marquette’s girls won their 26th-straight Great Northern Conference title, and Marquette’s boys ran their championship streak to 13; both are top-ranked in Upper Peninsula Division 1 – Escanaba Daily Press

3. BOYS TENNIS Williamston won five flights on the way to a Lower Peninsula Division 4 Regional team title – Lansing State Journal

4. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Traverse City West earned a key Big North Conference sweep of Cadillac – Up North Live

5. BOYS SOCCER Bloomfield Hills got past Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice 3-2 in a Division 1 District opener – Oakland Press

6. BOYS SOCCER Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Laker followed Faustin Therer to a Division 3 District-opening 4-1 victory – Huron Daily Tribune

7. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Essexville Garber came back to defeat Frankenmuth in five sets – Saginaw News

8. BOYS SOCCER Spring Lake opened its Division 2 District with a 6-0 win over Sparta – Grand Haven Tribune

9. BOYS SOCCER Traverse City Central opened Division 1 District play with a 7-1 win over Midland – Up North Live
