A busy weekend saw hundreds of wrestlers compete for individual District championships and many of the state’s top swimmers face off to see how they might stack up at next month’s MHSAA Finals.

Each weekday during the school year, we’ll gather and post media links covering the most significant and intriguing high school events from all over the state. 

Boys Basketball

Detroit East English won its Detroit Public School League quarterfinal over Pershing 82-80 on a dunk with two seconds to play – Detroit News

Niles Brandywine needed overtime but remains undefeated after a 48-40 win over Berrien Springs – Niles Daily Star

Gladstone upset formerly one-loss Sault Ste. Marie 74-47 with 31 points from Reece Castor – Escanaba Daily Press

Hockey

Hancock downed rival Houghton 7-4 in a matchup of neighbors and top Division 3 programs; Houghton is ranked No. 7 and Hancock is No. 6 – Houghton Daily Mining Gazette

Boys Swimming & Diving

Many of the best in Michigan competed at Saturday’s Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association meet, with Holland West Ottawa sophomore Derek Maas and Zeeland senior Gabriel Trevino winning multiple races – MISCAonline.net

Wrestling

Top-ranked Detroit Catholic Central sent 14 wrestlers through to Division 1 Regionals, including 10 District champions – Observer & Eccentric

In Division 3, No. 2 Richmond also advanced 14 to Regionals with 10 District champions – Macomb Daily

Gaylord, No. 5 in Division 2, sent 10 to Regionals with five winning titles Saturday – Petoskey News-Review

Brighton tied a school record by advancing 12 wrestlers to Regionals in Division 1 – Livingston Daily Press & Argus

Massive matchups in wrestling and hockey highlighted a full weekend, as six sports made our top-10 headliners list.

 

1. Wrestling: Division 1 top-ranked Davison downed Division 2 top-ranked Lowell 51-6, and then defeated Alma and Division 3 No. 1 Dundee – State Champs Sports Network

2. Hockey: Division 2 No. 5 Hartland downed top-ranked Livonia Stevenson 5-1 – Livingston Daily Press & Argus

3. Wrestling: Division 2 No. 5 Stevensville Lakeshore remained unbeaten with a win over No. 7 Middleville Thornapple Kellogg – St. Joseph Herald-Palladium

4. Bowling: Brady Cornell’s 300 helped Corunna’s boys get past Owosso 25-5 – Owosso Argus-Press

5. Boys Swimming & Diving: Ann Arbor Skyline – No. 3 in Lower Peninsula Division 2 – won against LPD3 No. 7 Pinckney, LPD2 No. 10 Midland Dow and LPD1 No. 7 Brighton at the Bulldogs’ quad – We Love Ann Arbor

6. Hockey: Ty Langlois had three goals and three assists as Muskegon Mona Shores downed Division 2 No. 9 Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern/Eastern 6-3 – Local Sports Journal

7. Girls Basketball: East Grand Rapids moved to 6-0 with a 53-42 win over Kalamazoo Central – FOX 17

8. Gymnastics: Marquette posted a Regional-qualifying team score in winning its invitational – Marquette Mining Journal

9. Hockey: Division 2 No. 3 Trenton came back from an early deficit to defeat Grosse Pointe South 3-1 – Southgate News-Herald

10. Wrestling: Division 3 No. 3 Whitehall avenged last season’s loss to Muskegon Reeths-Puffer to take back the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association championship – Local Sports Journal
