It’s hardly a secret that varsity football season begins tonight, and previews dominated most media coverage this morning. But we still found some significant results to share from golf, soccer and volleyball.
Each weekday during the school year, we’ll gather and post media links covering the most significant and intriguing high school events from all over the state.
Girls Golf
Livonia Stevenson nearly pulled off a perfect score (based on event format) in repeating at champion of the Livonia Girls City Golf Meet – Observer & Eccentric
Boys Soccer
Battle Creek Central is a step closer to repeating as All-City Tournament winner after a 4-0 semifinal win over Harper Creek; Central will play Lakeview for the title – Battle Creek Enquirer
Rochester remained unbeaten with a 1-0 win over Lake Orion to kick off play in the Oakland Activities Association Red – Oakland Press
It just missed the MHSAA record book list for most goals in a game by two teams combined, but Warren Woods Tower’s 6-6 tie against Clinton Township Chippewa Hills still qualifies as a high-scoring contest – Detroit News
Volleyball
Mendon won the St. Joseph County Tournament with a repeat championship match clincher over Three Rivers, this time 25-18, 25-13 – Sturgis Journal

1. HOCKEY Houghton finished a winning weekend with a 5-1 victory over Division 1 No. 3 Hartland, giving coach Corey Markham his 379th victory – breaking the school record of past coach Don Miller; both are among the winningest coaches in MHSAA history – Houghton Daily Mining Gazette
2. WRESTLING South Lyon won its first Oakland County championship in this sport – Oakland Press
3. WRESTLING Division 4 No. 3 Bronson went 5-0 to win the Coldwater Classic, including edging No. 6 Union City 39-34 – Coldwater Daily News
4. WRESTLING Division 2 No. 3 Bay City John Glenn won a fourth-straight Bay County championship – Bay City Times
5. HOCKEY Division 3 No. 4 Riverview Gabriel Richard claimed its Christmas Tournament title for the second-straight year with a pair of 9-1 victories – Southgate News-Herald
6. GIRLS BASKETBALL East Grand Rapids edged Redford Westfield Prep 61-56 at the West Michigan Hoops Summit – FOX 17
7. BOYS BASKETBALL Kalamazoo Central capped its Don Jackson Invitational with a 63-61 win over Saginaw – WWMT
8. WRESTLING Division 4 No. 4 Iron Mountain was among teams to impress at the Marquette Challenge – Upper Michigan Source
