Thursday saw the start of varsity football season, and nearly half of Michigan’s teams kicked off their fall.

Football’s first week in review will be posted Monday afternoon; in the meantime, there is more good news to report from today’s statewide headlines.

Cross Country

The Croswell-Lexington girls and Yale boys won the Mike Jackson Invitational, with Port Huron’s Rachel Bonner – fourth at the Lower Peninsula Division 1 Final last season – taking the girls individual title by 59 seconds – Port Huron Times-Herald

Girls Golf

Spring Lake set a school record shooting 321 to win the Big Rapids Invitational, also placing the top two individuals – Grand Haven Tribune

Longtime cross country and track and field official Doug Steward was quoted as saying he was close to retiring – in 2009. But this fall, after 51 years, he indeed will start his final races – Mount Pleasant Morning Sun

The Lac Vieux Desert Tribe presented Watersmeet schools with $174,000 earlier this year that in part went to a new gym floor complete with the school's nationally-recognized Nimrod logo – Ironwood Daily Globe

2. HOCKEY Division 1 top-ranked Detroit Catholic Central came back to get past Division 2 No. 5 Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice 3-2 – Oakland Press

3. HOCKEY Division 1 No. 2 Brighton edged No. 6 Salem 3-0, and Division 2 top-ranked Hartland downed Division 3 No. 3 Orchard Lake St. Mary’s 6-4 – Livingston Daily Press & Argus

4. GIRLS BASKETBALL Freshman Sophia Bussell set Monroe’s school record with eight 3-pointers in a 63-43 win over Ypsilanti Lincoln – Monroe News

5. GIRLS BASKETBALL Flushing defeated Swartz Creek 54-27, delivering coach Larry Ford his 300th win – Flint Journal

6. BOYS BASKETBALL Gavin Dukaj scored nine of his 12 points after regulation, draining three 3-pointers over two overtimes in Tawas’ 58-56 win over Beaverton – Bay City Times

7. GIRLS BASKETBALL St. Ignace edged Pickford 58-56 on a buzzer beater – Sault Ste. Marie Evening News

8. WRESTLING Division 1 No. 8 Grandville’s pin in the final match secured a 37-30 win over Hudsonville – FOX17

9. HOCKEY Petoskey avenged an earlier loss to Traverse City Central, 4-3 – Petoskey News-Review
