With school starting for many this week and the rest in only a few days, it’s a time for new beginnings in Michigan – including the local cross country season Tuesday in our northernmost counties.

Each weekday during the school year, we’ll gather and post media links covering the most significant and intriguing high school events from all over the state.

Cross Country

The Houghton boys and Calumet girls opened the local cross country season with wins at the Painesdale-Jeffers Invitational – Houghton Daily Mining Gazette

Girls Golf

Adrian shot a team 416 to win its home invitational, edging Coldwater by three strokes – Adrian Daily Telegram

Boys Soccer

Muskegon Western Michigan Christian earned a 4-3 win over Fruitport despite the latter’s Zack Shane netting three goals – Muskegon Chronicle

Rochester remained undefeated with a 1-0 win over rival Adams thanks to second-half score – Oakland Press

Boys Tennis

Pinckney downed Howell using a doubles tie-breaker, but Howell’s Matt Wenzel got past Wilson Wagner is a matchup of Livingston County’s top singles players – Livingston Daily

Volleyball

Maria Mallon put together an incredible individual evening in leading her team over Macomb L’Anse Creuse North, Bloomfield Hills Marian and Lapeer – Macomb Daily

3. GIRLS SOCCER Holland Black River clinched the Southwestern Athletic Conference Lakeshore title with a 2-1 win over South Haven – Holland Sentinel

4. BOYS GOLF Orchard Lake St. Mary’s – No. 5 in Lower Peninsula Division 2 – and Macomb Lutheran North’s Lance Milton were Catholic High School League Bishop champions – Macomb Daily

5. BASEBALL Saline took over first in the Southeastern Conference Red with a sweep of Division 1 No. 11 Dexter – Ann Arbor News

6. BASEBALL Frankenmuth and Division 2 No. 12 Freeland split in the Tri-Valley Conference Red – Saginaw News

7. BASEBALL Division 4 No. 2 Portland St. Patrick swept No. 10 Fowler – Lansing State Journal

8. SOFTBALL Two days after falling to Division 3 honorable mention Gladstone in tournament play, Division 2 honorable mention Escanaba earned a league sweep – Upper Michigan’s Source
