The first day of school for most across our state brought with it mega matchups in a variety of sports – and some early re-ordering of teams as a few new league title contenders emerged.

Each weekday during the school year, we’ll gather and post media links covering the most significant and intriguing high school events from all over the state.

Cross Country

Remus Chippewa Hills’ girls, who had only an individual qualifier at last season’s MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division 2 Final, downed Big Rapids, which finished 16th at that race in 2015 – Big Rapids News

Girls Golf

Division 1 No. 9 Brighton continued to dominate this young season, downing Hartland while still playing without the reigning Miss Golf and another expected starter – Livingston Daily

Boys Soccer

Division 1 No. 5 Troy Athens earned a key early league win over No. 19 Rochester Hills Stoney Creek, 3-0 – Oakland Press

Warren DeLaSalle handed Sterling Heights Stevenson the latter’s first loss this season, 4-3, after trailing at halftime – Macomb Daily

Volleyball

Zeeland East downed both reigning Ottawa-Kent Conference Green champions in one night, defeating Zeeland West and then Byron Center both in two sets – Holland Sentinel

Port Huron Northern swept Marysville in three sets in a matchup of top Port Huron-area programs – Port Huron Times Herald

1. BOYS BASKETBALL Detroit Western came back from 17 points down to get past No. 20 River Rouge 75-71 in overtime of a Division 1 District opener – Detroit News

2. BOYS BASKETBALL Union City opened Division 3 play with a 59-56 win over White Pigeon thanks to a last-minute 3-pointer – Coldwater Daily Reporter

3. BOYS BASKETBALL Battle Creek Harper Creek defeated Pennfield 63-58 in Division 2, as Pennfield’s Luke Davis became his school’s all-time leading scorer in his final game – Battle Creek Enquirer

4. BOYS BASKETALL No. 13 Elk Rapids opened in Division 3 with a 66-58 win over host Maple City Glen Lake – Traverse City Record-Eagle

5. BOYS BASKETBALL Pinconning advanced in Division 3 with a 50-45 overtime win over Beaverton – Bay City Times

6. BOYS BASKETBALL Bashir Neely scored 30 points to lead No. 18 Grand Haven past Muskegon Reeths-Puffer 69-57 in Division 1 – Grand Haven Tribune

7. BOYS BASKETBALL Danny Safadi’s last-second basket pushed Midland Dow past Bay City Central 64-62 in Division 1 – Midland Daily News
