The first day of school for most across our state brought with it mega matchups in a variety of sports – and some early re-ordering of teams as a few new league title contenders emerged.

Each weekday during the school year, we’ll gather and post media links covering the most significant and intriguing high school events from all over the state.

Cross Country

Remus Chippewa Hills’ girls, who had only an individual qualifier at last season’s MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division 2 Final, downed Big Rapids, which finished 16th at that race in 2015 – Big Rapids News

Girls Golf

Division 1 No. 9 Brighton continued to dominate this young season, downing Hartland while still playing without the reigning Miss Golf and another expected starter – Livingston Daily

Boys Soccer

Division 1 No. 5 Troy Athens earned a key early league win over No. 19 Rochester Hills Stoney Creek, 3-0 – Oakland Press

Warren DeLaSalle handed Sterling Heights Stevenson the latter’s first loss this season, 4-3, after trailing at halftime – Macomb Daily

Volleyball

Zeeland East downed both reigning Ottawa-Kent Conference Green champions in one night, defeating Zeeland West and then Byron Center both in two sets – Holland Sentinel

Port Huron Northern swept Marysville in three sets in a matchup of top Port Huron-area programs – Port Huron Times Herald

1. BOYS BASKETBALL Division 1 top-ranked Detroit Catholic Central downed No. 2 Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice 55-51 – Oakland Press

2. GIRLS BASKETBALL Division 1 No. 2 Dearborn Divine Child remained undefeated with a 47-43 win over No. 10 Bloomfield Hills Marian – Detroit Free Press

3. GIRLS BASKETBALL St. Joseph moved into first place alone in the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference West with a 58-42 win over Portage Central – St. Joseph Herald-Palladium

4. BOYS BASKETBALL Romeo took over first alone in the Macomb Area Conference White with a 60-42 win over Utica Eisenhower – Macomb Daily

5. BOYS BASKETBALL Traverse City West delivered Cadillac’s first Big North Conference defeat, 35-28 – Traverse City Record-Eagle

6. BOYS BASKETBALL Warren Fitzgerald edged St. Clair Shores South Lake 54-50 in a matchup of MAC Gold contenders – Macomb Daily

7. SKIING Harbor Springs swept girls and boys Lake Michigan Conference races – Petoskey News-Review

8. GIRLS BASKETBALL Sanford Meridian extended its school-record winning streak to 12 with a big one over Harrison – Midland Daily News

9. GIRLS BASKETBALL Muskegon Western Michigan Christian posted an impressive 55-40 win over Montague – Muskegon Chronicle

10. BOYS BASKETBALL A late putback pushed Holt past Lansing Waverly 64-62 – Lansing State Journal
