What's My Why: Official Dino Paganelli

Michigan has produced several notable Super Bowl officials, including brothers Dino, Carl and Perry Paganelli from Wyoming Rogers High School. Remarkably, at least one Paganelli has officiated in eight of the 60 Super Bowls.
Dino has been part of three Super Bowls – XLVII, LV, and LVII – and previously was an MHSAA-registered football official from 1986-87 through 2003-04. He also officiated basketball during 14 of those 17 school years.
I think back to my positive experiences in football from high school, college and pros, and some of my fondest memories were working Friday night football.
It fostered that sense of giving back to the community, interaction with coaches and players, and – most importantly – my fellow crew mates.
Officiating has been a big part of our family, although it doesn’t define us, but it is a major beacon or guidance in regards to how we not only conduct ourselves professionally but also as officials. Those are lessons that were valuable, learned through the Michigan High School Athletic Association.

This week, MHSAA assistant director Brent Rice explains why officials take up the avocation despite frequent criticism of their best efforts.
Be The Referee is a series of short messages designed to help educate people on the rules of different sports, to help them better understand the art of officiating, and to recruit officials.

After the uproar about officiating in a recent pro football game, an online article appeared with the headline “Why in the world would anyone want to be a referee?” It’s a good question.
While everyone in the game – players, coaches and officials – strive for perfection, only the officials are ultimately expected to reach that standard. And that’s simply not fair. So why would anyone want to be a referee?
Every referee will give you three little words: “I love it!” They love it because they know how important it is – no matter the level of play. And they want to be right all the time – and most of the time they are. And like a lot of other things in sports, the friendships and relationships built, the memories – they can’t be beat. So we’ll always encourage people to join us as referees, and for those who can’t – or won’t – to stay in their lane when at the game.
