Be the Referee: Fair or Foul?

Be The Referee is a series of short messages designed to help educate people on the rules of different sports, to help them better understand the art of officiating, and to recruit officials.

Below is this week's segment – Fair or Foul? - Listen

A batter hits a line drive down the first base line. The first baseman, about a foot inside the line, leaps at the ball before it passes first base and deflects it into foul territory.

The batter, thinking the ball is foul, lets up and returns to the batter’s box.

The catcher trailing the play picks up the ball and runs over to first and steps on the bag. What’s the call?

Because the ball was over fair territory when touched by the first baseman, it doesn’t matter where the deflected ball lands – it’s a fair ball, a live ball. The out stands, as the catcher touched first base with the ball before the batter got to the base.

On plays like this, it’s incumbent on the umpires to make a clear signal to leave no doubt that the ball is live.

Performance of the Week: Bridgman's Chuck Pagel

June 23, 2023

Chuck PagelChuck Pagel ♦ Bridgman
Sophomore ♦ Baseball

Pagel threw a complete game, striking out five batters while allowing only three hits and a walk, as Bridgman defeated top-ranked Algonac 7-1 in the Division 3 Final to clinch the Bees’ first baseball championship since 1987. Bridgman had entered the postseason ranked No. 16 in the Division 3 state coaches poll and finished 33-9.

The team’s cleanup hitter, Pagel had gone hitless in Bridgman’s 3-2 Semifinal win over Standish-Sterling. But he rebounded at the plate in the Final going 2 for 3 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in one. He was named to the Division 3 all-state second team as a first baseman and finished the season hitting .395 with 36 runs scored, 15 doubles and 44 RBI. He also was 8-4 pitching with a 2.21 ERA. Pagel also has played basketball and football for the Bees.
