The four-year varsity standout capped her career by leading Arbor Prep to its first Finals championship since 2016. Petticord had 27 points (on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line) as the Gators edged Kent City 54-50 in Saturday’s Division 3 championship game. She also scored 20 points in Arbor Prep’s 57-44 Semifinal win over Maple City Glen Lake two days before.
Petticord averaged 22.9 points with five assists per game this season as the Gators finished 25-2. Arbor Prep went 77-17 over her four seasons on the team. The 5-foot-9 guard finished runner-up in this season’s Miss Basketball Award voting and will continue her career next season at Texas A&M. She plans to study business and would like to become an entrepreneur.

Be the Referee: Faking Being Fouled

Be The Referee is a series of short messages designed to help educate people on the rules of different sports, to help them better understand the art of officiating, and to recruit officials.
Below is this week's segment – Faking Being Fouled - Listen
In the second quarter, a basketball player drives into the lane and snaps their head backward to simulate contact from a defender — but no contact occurs. The lead official immediately recognizes the “head bob,” sounds the whistle, and issues a team warning for faking being fouled. The offense keeps the ball for a throw-in at the spot nearest the infraction.
Later in the game, the same player attempts a jump shot and falls backward after releasing the ball to again simulate contact. The official stops play. The shot is successful, so the basket counts. However, because the same team already received a warning, a team technical foul is assessed. The defense is awarded two free throws and possession at the division line opposite the table.
