Coach's Guide to Nutrition: Celebrate Chocolate Milk Day on Sept. 27

National Chocolate Milk Day, celebrated on September 27, is a great opportunity to highlight a favorite drink that can also play a role in an athlete’s recovery routine.

Milk Means More logoFor high school athletes, chocolate milk can be a convenient choice after a hard practice, workout or game.

It provides carbohydrates to help replace energy, protein to help repair and rebuild muscle, and fluids and electrolytes to support rehydration.

The first 30-45 minutes after exercise is an important time to begin refueling, and chocolate milk provides key nutrients athletes need to help their bodies recover and prepare for what’s next.

This National Chocolate Milk Day, raise a glass and refuel, rebuild and rehydrate for what’s next.

Coaches Guide to Nutrition: Supplements

Did you know that dietary supplements are not regulated by the government?

Milk Means More logoEncourage your athletes to utilize food as their first option rather than a supplement.

If your athlete decides to utilize supplements, encourage them to look for supplements with a “USP Verified,” “Informed Sport,” or “NSF Certified Sport” seal.

For athletes, it’s important to note that some supplements (or ingredients in supplements) are banned. This includes some energy drinks; encourage your athletes to utilize supplements with extreme caution.

Supplements are intended to supplement or add to the diet – not act as a substitute for food. Supplements can include vitamins, minerals, amino acids, probiotics or herbs.
