Basketball teams got an early start on the weekend and holiday break with a number of Thursday night games, topped by a girls rivalry between high-powered neighbors.
“Today in the MHSAA” will take a break as well over the next two weeks and return Jan. 6.
1. Girls Basketball: Midland improved to 5-0 with its first win over rival Dow in two seasons, 38-31 – Midland Daily News

Boys basketball season tipped off Monday and gained most of the headlines. Here’s a look at some of the games that got the most attention, plus a few more notable events from other sports.

Steven Lloyd tied a school record set in 1965 with 38 points in Clinton Township Chippewa Valley’s 76-66 opening-night win over Royal Oak – Macomb Daily
Reigning Class A champion Detroit Western International downed Chicago city league champion Bogan 65-60 – Detroit News
Reigning Class C champion Flint Beecher hung its latest championship banner and then downed rival Flint Southwestern 77-49 – Flint Journal
Detroit U-D Jesuit edged Chicago Morgan Park 64-61 behind 26 points from senior guard Cassius Winston – Mlive-Detroit
Girls Basketball
Bay City John Glenn continued its impressive start with a 41-23 victory over previously-undefeated Frankenmuth – Saginaw News
Competitive Cheer
From Saturday, St. Joseph – eighth in Division 2 last season – won the first of three “Cheer by the Pier” events scheduled for this season, scoring 629.92 points to edge Otsego by 1.94 – St. Joseph Herald-Palladium
