Elections were completed recently to fill positions on the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s legislative body, its Representative Council, with six members receiving re-election from their respective constituencies and two new members also selected to join the Council beginning with its Fall meeting this December.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association will conduct its 48th annual Update Meeting series during September and October, and this year’s schedule will again offer in-service programming for athletic directors at six of the seven locations.

The addition of girls field hockey as a sponsored postseason championship sport and a revised schedule for Lower Peninsula Boys Tennis Finals are the most significant changes to fall sports as practices are set to begin Monday, Aug. 11, for an anticipated 100,000 high school athletes at Michigan High School Athletic Association member schools.

The annual Michigan High School Athletic Association participation fee survey saw record response for the 2024-25 school year and revealed good news as the percentage of member high schools charging student-athletes to play sports remained consistent with lowered post-pandemic levels.

This summer has seen several stretches of hot and humid weather, and as student-athletes prepare to begin practices and competition schedules this month, the Michigan High School Athletic Association is again ramping up awareness of hot-weather precautions as schools and families prepare for activity.

MHSAA member high schools reported a combined participation of 275,684 athletes in MHSAA-sponsored tournament sports during the 2024-25 school year – the highest number of participants in those activities since 2018-19 and despite another decrease in combined enrollment across those 754 schools.

A total of 93 schools won one or more of the 130 Michigan High School Athletic Association team championships awarded during the 2024-25 school sports year, with 31 teams winning the first MHSAA titles in their respective sports.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association is accepting registrations online for game officials for the 2025-26 school year.

The approval of a pilot program assigning all four Lower Peninsula Tennis Finals to be played at one site and the addition of girls wrestling team championships for District and Regional rounds were among actions taken by the Representative Council of the Michigan High School Athletic Association during its Spring Meeting, May 4-5 in Gaylord.
