Performance of the Week: Vestaburg's Owen Patton

April 27, 2023

Owen PattonOwen Patton ♦ Vestaburg
Junior ♦ Track & Field

Patton is continuing this season to establish himself as one of the state’s top small-school distance runners, as he cut 12 seconds from his previous personal record – and school record – in the 3,200 meters at last week’s Lakeview Invitational in posting a runner-up 9:55.39. Patton runs in Lower Peninsula Division 4 and finished second at Lakeview to Owen Westerkamp from Division 2 Big Rapids.

Patton also finished second at last season’s LPD4 Final in the 1,600 – less than a second behind champion Lezawe Osterink of Wyoming Potter’s House Christian – plus eighth in the 800 and 22nd in the 3,200. Patton is the reigning Mid-State Activities Conference champion in the 800 and 1,600 and won the latter at this season’s first league jamboree. Patton also is coming off an eighth place at the LPD4 Cross Country Final, having improved from 28th in that race as a sophomore.

Be the Referee: Track & Field False Starts & Restarts

By Geoff Kimmerly

May 27, 2025

Be The Referee is a series of short messages designed to help educate people on the rules of different sports, to help them better understand the art of officiating, and to recruit officials.

Below is this week's segment – Track & Field False Starts & Restarts - Listen

We’re on the track today and in the starting blocks for the 100-meter dash. Just before the starter’s pistol goes off, the runner in Lane 3 lunges forward and false starts. What’s the call?

The runner who committed the false start is disqualified. There’s no longer a warning or second chance given. Everyone else lines up and gets ready to start again.

What about when a runner falls due to contact with another competitor in a distance race? If the contact happens in the first 50 meters, the race should be recalled – meaning they are brought back to the starting line for a re-do. The old rule called for a re-start if the contact occurred in the first 100 meters – but now it is within the first 50 meters.
