Be The Referee is a series of short messages designed to help educate people on the rules of different sports, to help them better understand the art of officiating, and to recruit officials.
Below is this week's segment – Hockey Overtime - Listen
There may be nothing more exciting than overtime hockey in the playoffs. So what happens in the MHSAA Ice Hockey Tournament when a winner cannot be determined after three periods?
If a game is tied at the end of regulation, sudden victory overtime is played for a maximum of four, 8-minute overtime periods. If someone scores a goal in one of those periods, they win – game over.
But if it’s still tied after four overtime periods, then the fifth overtime period and any additional overtime periods are played 4 on 4 until a winner is determined.
Let’s say a team starts the fifth OT with two players in the penalty box. Then that period will start 5 on 3 until the penalties expire. Then, at the first stoppage – teams revert to 4 on 4.

Performance of the Week: Riverview Gabriel Richard's Brenden Paden
December 20, 2022
Brenden Paden ♦ Riverview Gabriel Richard
Senior ♦ Hockey
The 6-foot-5 senior forward turned an incredible performance into a special week. He tallied two goals and two assists as Division 3 No. 5 Gabriel Richard downed Division 2 No. 2 Trenton 5-1, and then added a combined three goals and two assists in a pair of weekend wins over Brownstown Woodhaven and Riverview Cabrini United as the Pioneers repeated as their hosted Christmas Tournament champions.
Gabriel Richard is 7-4 this season – with all four of those losses to ranked teams in Divisions 1 or 2 – and Paden has eight goals and eight assists to rank third on his team with 16 points. His father Kevin Paden was a 1993 third-round NHL draft selection by the Edmonton Oilers and played six seasons of minor league hockey, and Brenden is considering playing junior hockey after high school in hopes of eventually landing a spot on a college hockey roster.
